Understanding Teen Counselling in Ottawa
If you are searching for a therapist for your teenager, something at home has probably already shifted — a door that stays closed, grades sliding, a bright kid who suddenly cannot get out of bed for school, an eruption of anger that seems to come from nowhere, or the flat 'I'm fine' that clearly is not. Teen counselling in Ottawa and Kanata gives your teenager a space that is entirely theirs: no report card, no family politics, no performing okay-ness for a parent's sake. For many teens, the first honest conversation about how they are actually doing happens in a therapy room.
We work with teens aged 14 and up, and the first job is always buy-in — therapy only works if your teen decides the therapist is worth talking to. Sessions are one-on-one, 50 minutes, and grounded in approaches that fit how teenagers actually think: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety and low mood, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for identity and values, DBT-informed skills for big emotions, and a person-centred stance that treats your teen as capable rather than broken. Common territory includes school stress and perfectionism, social anxiety, friendship and relationship fallout, screens and gaming, self-esteem, family conflict, and the post-pandemic social gaps many teens are still carrying.
Parents stay in the loop without breaking the teen's trust: we are transparent with teens about the limits of confidentiality — safety concerns are always shared — and with your teen's knowledge we can offer parents practical guidance for what to do differently at home. Sessions are available after school and in the evening at our Kanata office, or by secure video for teens who open up more easily from their own room. Start with a free 20-minute consultation; parents and teens are both welcome to ask questions before anything is booked.

Key Benefits of Teen Counselling
A therapist your teen can talk to
The first job is always buy-in — therapy only works if your teen decides the therapist is worth talking to, so sessions start there.
Anxiety and low mood support
CBT-based help for social anxiety, worry, and the low mood behind a bright kid who suddenly cannot get out of bed for school.
School stress and perfectionism help
Support for academic pressure, perfectionism, and the post-pandemic social gaps many teens are still carrying.
Confidence and self-esteem building
A person-centred stance that treats your teen as capable rather than broken, building self-esteem from real experiences.
Emotional regulation skills
DBT-informed skills for big emotions — the eruptions of anger that seem to come from nowhere and the shutdowns that follow.
Parent guidance that protects teen trust
With your teen's knowledge, we offer parents practical guidance for home without disclosing the content of sessions.
Therapeutic Approaches Used
Evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to your unique needs and circumstances. Our therapists are trained in multiple approaches. Schedule a consultation to discuss which approach is best for you.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Evidence-based work on the anxiety and low mood driving school avoidance, withdrawal, and sliding grades.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Identity- and values-focused work that fits how teenagers actually think about who they are and who they want to become.
DBT-Informed Skills
Concrete emotional regulation tools for big feelings — usable in the hallway, not just in the therapy room.
Person-Centred Therapy
A stance that treats your teen as capable rather than broken — often the first honest conversation about how they are actually doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about teen counselling and what to expect. Have more questions? Contact us or book a free consultation.
My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. What should I do?
Start with a low-pressure framing: one conversation with a therapist, no commitment, and they can decide afterward whether to continue. Most reluctant teens soften once they realise the therapist is not an extension of their parents and the session is genuinely confidential. Our free 20-minute consultation works well for this — your teen can meet the therapist, ask questions, and keep some control over the decision, which matters enormously at this age.
Will I be told what my teenager says in sessions?
Not in detail — and that privacy is precisely what makes teens talk. We are transparent with both of you about the limits: anything involving safety, including risk of harm to your teen or someone else, is always shared with parents. Beyond that, with your teen's knowledge, we can give you practical guidance on how to support what they are working on without disclosing the content of sessions.
What ages do you work with?
We provide counselling for teens aged 14 and up, along with young adults and parents themselves. For younger children, the most effective route is usually parent-focused work or family therapy, where we help you change the dynamics at home directly — and where a younger child's struggles often improve without the child ever needing to attend. We can advise on the best starting point during a free consultation.
How do I know if my teen needs counselling or is just being a teenager?
Look for change and duration rather than any single behaviour. Warning signs include a marked shift lasting more than a few weeks — withdrawal from friends and activities they used to enjoy, sliding grades, school refusal, sleep changes, persistent irritability or hopelessness, or talk of not wanting to be here. Trust your instinct: parents are usually right when they sense something is off, and a consultation costs nothing.
